Mridangam

Mridangam is a double-headed drum being used since the ancient times.It is also known as the “King of the Percussion Instruments“. It is also believed to be the South-Indian version of the Pakhawaj.It is a divine instrument as it is said to have been played by Lord Shiva and Nandhi Devar.Mridangam is used as a lead instrument in tala vadya ensembles and  as a solo instrument in Thani Avarthanam(Carnatic music) concerts. It is related to the dance styles of Bharat Natyam, Kuchipudi and Mohiniattam.The pitch of Mridangam varies inversely with its size.Generally length of Mridangam is 22-23 inches .Learning Mridangam is a demanding art and it takes many years to do the same.
