Sitar

Sitar is one of the most popular String-plucked Indian instruments. It is a long necked instrument with interesting construction. It is basically a hollowed out pumpkin with a neck, a gourd at the top of the neck which is for extra resonatoin, and 19 strings. It is used in North Indian classical music (Hindustani Sangeet), film music, and western fusion music. Materials used in construction include teak wood or tun wood (Cedrela tuna) for neck and faceplate (tabli), and gourds for the kaddu (the main resonating chamber). The instrument’s bridges are made of deer horn, ebony, or very occasionally from camel bone.
